Welcome to the Cutforth Family Blog. This blog provides insight into the lives of Dave, Shawnna and Kaitlyn Cutforth. Of course, since Kaitlyn is the newest (and cutest) member of our family, most of the focus is on her development and the fun things we do as parents.

6 Month Studio Portraits

As mentioned in an earlier post, we had studio portraits taken on Kaitlyn's 6 month birthday. I'm only 1 month late posting them - better late than never.

Kaitlyn is clapping and scooting!

Kaitlyn has some new tricks up her sleeves these days. Just two weeks ago, I noticed that she was clapping her hands. At first we wondered if she was just banging her hands together like she bangs toys together. But we soon realized that she had been watching us clap when she was doing exciting things, and had learned that it was something fun to do. Amazing! She now watches our hands, then her own, and claps. It's adorable!
And just last weekend, Kaitlyn has started using all her arm strength to push herself backwards. I know she thinks it will take her forward, but she will learn soon enough how to do that.
And we thought that her rolling towards her destinations was trouble! Crawling is just around the corner. Baby proofing, here we go!

New Food: Prunes

At first she wasn't sure about the prunes...

6 Month Checkup

Today, I took Kaitlyn to her 6 month checkup at the doctor. She weighed in at 18 lbs 11 oz and measured 27 inches long. She's still well above average in both height and weight. They say that once she starts crawling and walking, her weight will level off, but she's still very tall - I think we know who she gets that from ;-)

She got three shots this time (including a flu shot) and will have to go back in 4 weeks to get a follow-up flu shot - ugh. She cried and screamed when she got the shots just like last time, but once it was over, she calmed down quickly and fell asleep in my arms. Other than that, she's in perfect health and the doctor says she can start eating more solids, so we'll start feeding her solids for breakfast and lunch as well as her current evening meal of pureed fruit & veggies.

New Foods: Carrots and Sweet Potatoes

Kaitlyn feeding herself carrots Kaitlyn's face after eating sweet potatoes for the first time

On Friday, Kaitlyn ate carrots for the first time. She was a little apprehensive at first, but quickly realized that they tasted good and ate the entire 2.5 ounces. We also gave her a spoon to play with (picture above, left) since she started to grab at the spoon we were using to feed her. That was a successful way to occupy her hands and give her a chance to practice holding a spoon and putting it in her mouth - the first step to feeding herself.

Tonight, we continued the process of introducing a new food every 4 days by giving her sweet potatoes for the first time. It probably goes without saying that they were a big hit as can be seen by the happy face in the picture above, right. The video below shows just how eager she is to consume all of the sweet potatoes. Check out the tongue action - too cute :-)

New Food: Green Beans

Kaitlyn eating green beans for the first time
On Kaitlyn's 6 month birthday, we had pictures taken in the morning (I'll post those pictures later), played baby games during the day and ate green beans for the first time at night.

As you can see from the video below, she definitely liked the green beans much more than the peas and she seems to really have this eating from a spoon thing down. After she ate all the green beans, she wanted more and even grabbed the spoon and was putting it in her mouth like she thought more food would appear. She's going to be feeding herself in no time - yikes!
